Hi, I'm new here and while browsing around I've noticed a lot of people looking for free or near free Christian education. After a couple of years researching this very issue here's what I've found available for anyone wanting to further their knowledge of the Scriptures and their Christian walk.

Here are several links to free curriculum.

Curriculum from accredited seminaries:

Other good sources of free education:

Nations University http://www.nationsu.org/ This is a good one, they charge U.S residence $100 per year but the  Chancellor is also the President at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN http://www.lipscomb.edu/ a well respected college.  If you complete the Bachelors program through Nations then Lipscomb will except you into their Masters program for a probation period. If you maintain good grades and prove yourself worthy of Masters level work they will place you into the regular student body.

After much prayer and consideration these are the choices that I've decided to go with.
Andersonville Theological Seminary Associate of Biblical Studies http://www.andersonvilleseminary.com/
North Texas Baptist Seminary Bachelors of Ministry http://www.ntbsonline.com/
Slidell Baptist Seminary Masters of Divinity http://fundamental.org/slidell/
Trinity School of Apologetics and Theology Doctor of Ministry  http://www.trinitytheology.org/

While I agree that more doors will open for someone who holds an accredited degree, I know several brothers who hold degrees from some of the schools mentioned above who are now Hospice Chaplains, Nursing Home Chaplains, Church Pastors and one is even an adjunct professor at an accredited university here in GA.

Great research, brother. I'm sure it will be helpful to many.

I agree about accreditation. You pay much more tuition at accredited schools because of their costs in obtaining and maintaining their accreditation. However, non-accredited schools can be just as good (sometimes "gooder") at a fraction of the cost.

Another school to consider is - Trinity School of Apologetics And Theology - http://www.trinitytheology.org/

They are fully accredited and I found the course work to be very demanding. I have just finished my Master of Theology and have already been accepted to continue with my PhD studies. There is a one time registration fee up front between $350 - $690 depending on which degree that you select to study.

Also, you get a chance to converse with students from all over the world that are also taking courses with the school.

Dear Brother, schools like Trinity School of Apologetics And Theology accreditation, which is ICAATS is no real accreditation at all. The degree would not be accepted or allowed to be introduced and used to further your education at any reputable college. It will not be accepted by anyone who had received their degree by a school that had a real accreditation below is a list of accredited colleges in the USA.
Now the important part of your choice is this, do you want a secular type degree to future some kind of professional work to make more money?  Or do you want a degree from a religious organization to enhance your knowledge of scripture and such along those lines?

For if you want religious degree's, in all honesty, you can obtain them for $100 from many places with minimal study, its just the truth. So if you need to know of some of the places that offer Religious Degree's, contact me and I will give you a list.  If you wish to obtain a secular degree for some other kind of profession.  Go to the website that I have listed below and find a College that is truly accredited by a real agency that you may obtain a Degree that is accepted anywhere in the world.  Remember most real accrediting agencies have the words "Higher Learning" some where in their title.  I have degree's from both, a Degree from a secular college of Higher Education and a Religious Degree from a church that has a school of Higher Learning.  I hope this widens your choices Brother so that you will undertand their are many to choose from, but making the correct choice for you, is the thing to do.   I understand the hard work that is involved in trying to find the right place to get an education.  I am now attempting to change fields of professional practice which requires more learning.

God Bless all in UCFM, may the Holy Spirit guide us daily in our work for the Lord.

You're absolutely correct Brother Kevin, and I agree that if someone is wanting to gain college credits they should definitely go to an accredited college or university.

On the other hand, if what someone is looking for is a free or near free Bible education then all of the sites listed above will provide sound Biblical training. You don't have to go to an accredited university to learn the Bible.

Also, I'm assuming that most of the folks here joined UCFM to become ordained ministers and if so then Biblical training is a must.

Amen. I have a degree from a religious institution, but I am also going back to get a secular degree for the purposes of secular work, as most secular companies (corporate america) will not recognize these religious, and/or non-accredited, degrees.

We do have to be careful though. There are many degree mills and accreditation mills out there that have absolutely no credibility and are "not even worth the paper they are printed on." For degrees that you can typically use for corporate/secular employment or to transfer to schools that are accredited by agencies recognized by the US Department of Education, you should use the site that Kevin posted to verify the agency.

Please understand though, just because a school isn't accredited doesn't mean that the education is worthless either, though your best bet is to lean to one that has passed a standard. Accreditation is a voluntary (and VERY EXPENSIVE) process, and just because a school cannot afford it yet (or doesn't want it) doesn't mean that it is of no value. This is why we must judge them by their FRUIT, and use discernment. Not only that, every college or university starts out unaccredited as there is a minimal amount of time "in business" before a school qualifies to apply, then the US DOE recognized accreditation agencies have a candidate status that the school is in BEFORE it can receive FULL accreditation. Sometimes, even excellent schools lose their accreditation because of non-academic reasons (By example: the football powerhouse Grin <Go Auburn! > Auburn University had a temporary loss of accreditation a little while ago, but regained it).

The point is, judge the schools by their fruit and by what you want to get out of the degree. If you are studying simply for the sake of knowledge, you can find MANY free programs. If you want a degree and a good education, there are many accredited and non-accredited schools that can provide this. In fact, you might even find some non-accredited (or independently accredited) schools that have tougher courses and better instruction than some regionally accredited colleges, but simply could not afford to get the regional accreditation (I've known people that graduated from regionally accredited schools with degrees, of whom I surpassed academically even without a degree) Yet, if you want a degree that will be accepted for transfer to other schools AND accepted in the corporate and secular world, stick to those that have US DOE recognized accreditation.

Choose wisely, and be blessed.

Accreditation – No U.S. government agency has ever or will ever give accreditation to any religious institution. While we all will agree that a school such as Harvard is an accredited University, the School of Theological Studies is not. Because the U.S. Government in following the guidelines of separation of state and government they will not allow the Department of Education to accredit any religious school, even though it may be a part of the larger university, therefore to allow accreditation to religious schools they allow independent accrediting agencies to do the work of accrediting religious institutions.

With that in mind we go to the next issue – being who is accredited by these U.S. institutions.

The various institutions within the U.S. to this date only give accreditation to religious schools within the U.S. with a few exceptions for some located in Canada.

In other countries they have their own accrediting agencies and are not required to by their country or any U.S. laws to become accredited by one of the U.S. agencies, and why should they?

Think about it for a moment, is Oxford accredited by any U.S. agency? No! Yet it is considered one of the prestigious schools in the world and their degree is accepted anywhere in the world.

As for ICAATS, it is a valid accrediting agency, recognized by the government of India for accrediting religious institutions. Hopefully, you are not going to state that India does not have the right to do their own independent accrediting without the blessing of the U.S.

Just take the time to go to http://www.icaats.org.in/ and read the information there.

ICAATS - The International Council For Accrediting Alternate And Theological Studies has been involved as an NGO in informal encouragement of theological studies in India since 1954.

In 2003 the Government of India approved it to function as an Accrediting Agency for Theological Studies.

History:  The International Council For Alternate And Theological Studies had an informal beginning in 1947 and since then it has been involved as an NGO  in informal encouragement of theological studies within India.

Documents were submitted for Government Approval in 2003, and after the due course of examination such an approval was granted on 15th December   according to the laws of the State and Central Government of India.

Through this approval, ICAATS has been permitted by the Government of India to play a deciding role in the development and accreditation of theological courses which do not come under the preview of University Grants Commission.

This approval by the Government of India is in accordance with the Constitution of India, which in the 29th and 30th Articles grants special rights to the Minority Groups in India. This includes the right of Christians to establish, run, and accredit courses devoted to Christian Theology.

ICAATS is also authorized to accredit theological studies outside India in keeping with the international character of the Christian community.

Accreditation In India: Accreditation of educational institutions in India takes an eclectic approach. A framework for this approach was provided in the Constitution of India that was adopted on 26th January 1950, a decade before the American accreditation system arose.

The establishment and accreditation of educational institutions in India go along two tracks: institutions in the general category, and institutions in the minority-community category. Of these, the accreditation of institutions in the general category is regulated by the Education Department and other related Government departments. On the other hand, the accreditation of minority-community institutions is regulated by special accrediting agencies. Special agencies can seek Government approval, and are granted such approval directly by the State and Central Government after the mandatory legal and official examination. This is done under the Cultural and Educational rights provided for in the Constitution of India.

The relevant clauses in the Constitution are:

The Constitution Of India

Cultural and Educational Rights

29. Protection of interests of minorities.—(1) Any section of the citizens residing in the territory of India or any part thereof having a distinct language, script or culture of its own shall have the right to conserve the same.

(2) No citizen shall be denied admission into any educational institution maintained by the State or receiving aid out of State funds on grounds only of religion, race, caste, language or any of them.

30. Right of minorities to establish and administer educational institutions. — (1) All minorities, whether based on religion or language, shall have the right to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice.

(1A) In making any law providing for the compulsory acquisition of any property of an educational institution established and administered by a minority, referred to in clause (1), the State shall ensure that the amount fixed by or determined under such law for the acquisition of such property is such as would not restrict or abrogate the right guaranteed under that clause.

(2) The State shall not, in granting aid to educational institutions, discriminate against any educational institution on the ground that it is under the management of a minority, whether based on religion or language.

The provisions made in the Constitution of India for the minorities-led-institutions was reinforces on 21 December 2005 when a special Bill related to the educational institutions of minority-communities (including Christians) was passed. In effect this Bill once again affirms that inter alia Bible schools, Theological Seminaries, etc in India shall not be regulated or accredited by the Department of Education, but rather by the State and Central Government. It also implies that accreditation councils for such institutions will be approved by the State and Central Government, and not by the Department of Education.

ICAATS is an Accrediting Agency established under this clause with the approval of the State and Central Government.

Keep in mind - only "1 in 20" religious schools within the U.S. are accredited, and in addition their is no requirement for any schools outside the U.S. to seek approval for accreditation from one of the U.S. institutions.

Just as a side thought, I work for an international corporation and they did accept the degree and its accreditation, because they also have over 60,000 workers from various countries and they would have to reject all of their diplomas, if they could only accept those schools that are accredited by the Department of Education and those agencies that are allowed to accredit religious schools.

I was also skeptical about accreditation-free schools, however, after I weighed the options, I decided that I would not get what I wanted from a school that is accredited by DOE for what I could afford to pay.

My Associate is from Andersonville. Their concentration is strictly on Biblical studies, theological studies, divinities and the like. My textbook was the Bible. Although I did not get a Harvard-level education, I did acquire an excellent BIBLICAL foundation, with fine theological scholarship. I didn't study advanced maths, sciences, humanities, etc. I didn't miss them. Besides, I did quite a lot of that at secular college years ago.

My purpose for studying with Andersonville was to study Scripture more thoroughly, to enrich my knowledge of the Word of God, to strengthen my relationship with Him, and to enhance my ministry and my opportunities for ministry.

So far, for my purposes, Andersonville has served me well. I intend to continue my education using low-cost/no-cost Christian/Bible colleges. Accreditation is not important to me.

Most of us in ministry understand the difference between accreditation and true value. Granted, there are some BIGCHURCH ministries out there that wouldn't hire me, but that is not my objective. My objective has always been smaller. Small group studies, small churches, house church, small ministries, small schools. Smaller ministries take the time to get to know me, and have always found me qualified.

Legally, I cannot teach at a County public school, however, I CAN teach at a private Christian school, which is what I would want to do. Lack of accreditation has not stopped me from doing anything that I have wanted to do so far.

The trick is to find a school that provides the education that you need to meet your goals, provides a curriculum that is challenging enough for you, and educate you in a set of skills that you can use in your work.

I think a lot of us forget the purpose of education (ANY education) is to prepare us for life and work, and to enrich our lives. Find a school -- accredited OR NOT -- that does this for you and you will succeed.

Excellent answers from both sides of the issue.  I read this particular posting with great interest because we have just finished gathering course work and now we are putting the final touches on Word of Hope Bible College.  I have talked to a lot of Bible College Accrediting Agencies, Presidents and so forth.  What I have found out is that it does take a lot of work and time.  LOL...

I myself only hold a Bachelors Degree in Theology and I am working on my Masters. The Lord simply used me for the vision and has blessed me to find people to teach and help make our school a reality.  It is an on line school which only offers a Diploma of Biblical Studies, Associates of Biblical Studies, and a Bachelors of Biblical Studies.

The course work I feel is excellent and we have more things coming. Our sole purpose is to train workers for the Kingdom.

The truth of accrediting is that you must first open your doors and steadily meet necessary requirements.  We are working hard to provide a quality Biblical Education.  God will take care of the rest.

We are looking for teachers.  If you have a masters degree or higher please send in a resume.  We can not pay you but it will give you excellent experience,  looks good on your resume, and you are helping train men and women to work in the ministry.  However we do vision this becoming a paid position one day.

We also have scholarships available to help defray the cost.  In simple terms you can study and get your degree for under $100 per month.  The cost will be very low for UCFM members because I really believe in what is happening here.  We have been working on this for 2 years and expect to open this week.  This post is excellent in timing.

I hope this can help those seeking a degree and those who have aspirations of teaching.  If you have questions email me or give me a call.
Here is the web site.
